Fifth wall design tip #1

Skylights open the fifth wall to the outdoors, by providing a view of blue skies, starry nights, passing storms or treetops swaying in the breeze. They bathe the room in natural light, revealing true colors and textures. Plus, skylights can open to enliven the space with fresh air, and, with blinds, now available in more than 100 colors and patterns, they can add an accent color above.

Fifth wall design tip #2

Paint the fifth wall to provide a compelling color accent for the room. In the HGTV® Smart Home 2017, designer Tiffany Brooks painted the ceilings in the master bathroom and closet a rich, chocolate brown for dramatic effect. VELUX skylights add natural light that make this dramatic color accent pop.

Fifth wall design tip #3

Leave exposed beams natural, paint them in a contrasting color or paint them the same color as your fifth wall for architectural interest above. Exposed beams combined with skylights can also create interesting shadow patterns as the sun traverses the sky.

Fifth wall design tip #4

Go a step further and apply wallpaper to the fifth wall for an overhead pattern that speaks to similar designs found in upholstery, pillows or rugs below.
